Mohamed Sultan is a Professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Western Michigan University, where he leads the Earth Sciences Remote Sensing Lab. His research integrates remote sensing and geographic information systems to solve geological and environmental challenges across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
- Education: Ph.D. in Geochemistry (Washington University, 1984), M.Sc. in Stratigraphy (Ain Shams University, 1978), B.Sc. in Geology (Ain Shams University, 1974)
His research spans interdisciplinary fields including:
- Hydrology and groundwater flow modeling
- Geochemistry and geochronology
- Remote sensing and geospatial analysis
- Climate change impacts on arid regions
Recent work focuses on tropical cyclone-driven aquifer recharge, flood management in the Arabian Peninsula, and structural controls on rift systems. Articles leverage NASA's EMIT, GRACE satellites, and deep learning for geospatial modeling.
His lab supervises graduate students and research scientists, particularly in:
- Sustainable water resource management
- Geohazard monitoring (salt diapirs, sinkholes)
- Climate extreme modeling
- Groundwater dynamics in arid regions
