Dr. Mohamed Elchalakani is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, The University of Western Australia (UWA), and Director of UWA's Structural Laboratory. He holds adjunct professorships at Chongqing University and Tanta University, and has been a Visiting Academic at Kyoto University. His roles include serving on the Australian and New Zealand Structural Steel Code Committee (BD-023) and editorial boards of journals like ASCE's Journal of Structural Engineering and Structures.
Education:
- PhD in Structures (Behavior and Design of Tubular Structures under Earthquake Loading), Monash University (2004)
- MEngSc in Civil Engineering (Soil-Structure Interaction), University of Adelaide (1997)
- BEng (Civil Engineering), Cairo University (1989)
Research Interests: His work focuses on concrete durability, FRP composites, geopolymer concrete, offshore structure repair, and seismic design. He pioneers sustainable materials like ECC and 3D-printed composites, and has authored two Elsevier books on concrete-filled tubular structures and geopolymer composites. His research also addresses corrosion mitigation, structural health monitoring, and energy-storing walls.
Grants & Projects:
- Recent funding includes Woodside Energy grants for geopolymer concrete and FRP repair ($120k–$100k)
- ARC-funded studies on thin-walled marine structures
- Projects on recycled plastic aggregates and smart roadside barriers
Awards:
- Ranked in top 0.7% of global Civil Engineers (Stanford's Top 2% Scientists)
- Holman Medal (Best PhD Thesis), Hunt Award (Excellence in Engineering)
- UWA Student Guild's 'Students' Choice Award' for teaching
Expertise: He provides expert witness services for non-compliance roof systems and advises on composite systems, industrial structures, and geotechnical foundations. His industrial projects span low- to high-rise buildings, water infrastructure, and marine structures.
Future Research: PhD/MPhil opportunities are available in dynamic composite behavior, sustainable materials, geopolymer structures, and offshore pipeline analysis.
