Mohamed A. F. Noor is Professor of Biology at Duke University's Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, where he has been a faculty member since 2005, rising to full Professor in 2008. In 2024, he was appointed Executive Vice Provost at Duke University, adding to his previous administrative roles including Interim Vice Provost of Academic Affairs (2023-2024), Interim Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences (2022-2023), and Dean of Natural Sciences (2019-2022). He is also an Associate of the Duke Initiative for Science & Society (2017-present) and a Bass Fellow (2016-present).
Dr. Noor received his B.S. from College of William and Mary in 1992 and his Ph.D. from The University of Chicago in 1996. His research focuses on evolutionary genetics, particularly understanding the genetic changes that contribute to speciation, maintenance of fitness-related variation in natural populations, and the effects of genetic recombination on evolutionary processes. His laboratory primarily uses Drosophila species as model organisms, combining classical genetic, molecular genetic, and genomic/bioinformatic approaches.
Recent publications reveal a strong focus on recombination rate variation, chromosomal inversions, and their roles in speciation. His work spans from fundamental evolutionary questions about species diversity to applied questions about lethal alleles in natural populations. Dr. Noor has also explored more speculative topics, such as how evolution might work on extraterrestrial life forms.
Dr. Noor has secured significant research funding, including an NSF grant (2021-2025) on the genetics and evolution of lethal alleles in Drosophila and an NIH training grant (2020-2025) for genetic and genomic studies. His teaching portfolio includes courses on succeeding in graduate school, research independent study, and first-year seminars.
