Mohamad Musavi serves as Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Maine, concurrently directing the SMART INCLUDES initiative. His academic home is the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE), where he operates from the Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center in Orono, Maine.
His research spans Biomedical Engineering with emphasis on inclusive systems design and engineering education reform. He actively develops frameworks for broadening participation in STEM through intersectional approaches, focusing on accessibility for underrepresented groups in technical curricula and research environments. His work integrates biomedical applications with social equity considerations in engineering practice.
As Director of SMART INCLUDES, Professor Musavi leads institutional transformation efforts to create structurally inclusive engineering ecosystems. The initiative implements evidence-based interventions including mentorship pipelines, curriculum redesign, and industry partnership development targeting systemic barriers in STEM participation.
