Dr. Joel Graber serves as Director of Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, and Data Science at the MDI Biological Laboratory, and co-Director of the Maine INBRE Data Science Core. He is affiliated with the University of Maine’s Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering (GSBSE). His work focuses on genomic data analysis, integrating cloud computing and Nextflow pipelines to support researchers. Dr. Graber holds a B.S. in Physics and Computer Science from Michigan Technological University (1987) and a Ph.D. in Physics from Cornell University (1993).
His research interests include genetic variation’s impact on mRNA processing (particularly polyadenylation), disrupted regulation in cancer, and computational methods for regulatory motif identification. He contributes to the PACdb database and develops novel algorithms using non-negative matrix factorization. Though not directly supervising students, he actively participates in GSBSE thesis committees.
Dr. Graber’s CompBio Core emphasizes reproducible workflows and training in computational biology, supporting both MDIBL and Maine INBRE initiatives. His recent studies explore polyadenylation’s role in development, tumor biology, and gene regulation.
