Professor Mo Hume is a Professor of Latin American Politics at the University of Glasgow's Department of Politics within the School of Political & International Studies. Her research focuses on gender-based violence, post-war conflict dynamics, socio-environmental conflicts, and transitional societies. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in El Salvador and Colombia, collaborating with organizations like Oxfam and SCIAF.
Her work explores intersections of gender, violence, and community resilience in post-conflict contexts, with a particular emphasis on Central America and Colombia. Key projects include studies on gender violence prevention campaigns and socio-environmental rights along the Atrato River in Colombia. She has published widely in journals such as Latin American Perspectives and Womens Studies International Forum, as well as authored a monograph on El Salvador's political violence.
Recent research includes analyzing grassroots responses to the pandemic in Colombia and exploring socio-environmental impacts of gold mining. Her work often combines feminist theory with interdisciplinary approaches to understand complex conflict dynamics.
Prof. Hume has secured grants totaling over £700,000, including projects on sustainable peacebuilding and humanitarian crisis management. She supervises PhD students researching topics such as indigenous resistance to extractivism and gender in transitional justice. She also serves as PGR Convener in the School of Social and Political Sciences and co-convenes the Glasgow Latin American Research Network.
