Mitchell Estrin is a Professor of Clarinet at the University of Florida, serving as Music Director and Conductor of the University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble. He is a 2018 University of Florida Research Foundation Professor and a 2023 Honorary Member of the International Clarinet Association. Prof. Estrin holds a Guinness World Record for conducting the world's largest clarinet choir (367 members, 2019) and has authored books on clarinet mastery and pedagogy.
Education: B.A. and M.A. in Clarinet Performance from The Juilliard School, supported by a Naumburg Scholarship. His 25-year tenure with the New York Philharmonic included roles as principal, second, and E-flat clarinetist under renowned conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Pierre Boulez.
Research focuses on clarinet performance, ensemble direction, and music education. He has premiered works like Michael Whalen's The Shadows of October, recorded for Arabesque, and conducted clarinet choirs across 5 continents. Awards include the ICA's highest honor and recognition in Who's Who in Classical Music.
Advising & Grants: Mentored students in major orchestras (e.g., Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra) and secured support through the ICA and UFRF. Founded the Vandoren Clarinet Ensemble Festival and Buffet Crampon USA Summer Academy.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Grammy-eligible University of Florida Clarinet Ensemble, producing acclaimed albums like Clarinet Thunder (2009) and Christmas Clarinets (2016). Serves as Artistic Director for international clarinet festivals and residencies.
