Mitchel P Mcclaran is a Professor of Range Management at the University of Arizona's School of Natural Resources and the Environment within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He has held this position since 1986 and currently serves as Director of the Arizona Experiment Station (since 2020) and Director for Research at the UA Santa Rita Experimental Range (since 2004). His research focuses on rangeland ecology, vegetation dynamics, and sustainable land management in arid environments.
Mcclaran earned his Ph.D. in Wildland Resource Science from UC Berkeley (1986), followed by M.S. and B.S. degrees in Range Management and Conservation. His work integrates ecological, social, and technological approaches, including drone-based monitoring and soil health assessments. He has authored/co-authored over 120 publications, emphasizing soil carbon dynamics, invasive species management, and climate adaptation strategies.
Mcclaran has received numerous accolades, including Fellowships from the Society for Range Management (2014) and the Bart Cardon Academy (2010), and the 2024 Paper of the Year Award for his work on global dryland biogeochemistry. His teaching excellence has been recognized through the Outstanding Teaching Award (1999) and multiple course accolades.
His research spans ecological modeling, remote sensing applications, and collaborative drought preparedness planning with ranchers and federal agencies. Mcclaran leads interdisciplinary projects addressing grazing impacts, shrub encroachment, and the resilience of dryland ecosystems under climate change.
