Dr. Mitch Lomax is an Associate Professor in Pulmonary Exercise Physiology at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Science and Health, within the School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences. She leads the MSc Applied Exercise Physiology course and coordinates the Advanced Exercise Physiology module (Level 5). Her research focuses on breathing limitations during exercise, respiratory muscle training, swimming physiology, and military task performance. She is a BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist (Research) and Chartered Scientist (UK Science Council).
- Education: BSc (Honors), MSc (Distinction), and PhD in Pulmonary Exercise Physiology from Brunel University (2007).
Research interests center on mitigating breathing limitations through methods like respiratory muscle training, with applications in clinical, occupational, and sporting contexts. She has collaborated with organizations such as Swim England, the IOC, and FINA, focusing on recovery strategies for swimmers and open water safety. Her military-related studies examine pulmonary constraints in tactical environments.
Recent articles highlight respiratory muscle fatigue in swimming, military load carriage physiology, and inhaler technique efficacy. Awards include her BASES accreditation and Chartered Scientist status. She supervises undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students and is involved in the BASES Occupational Performance Special Interest Group.
