Misato Sato is an Assistant Professorial Research Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from LSE, an MSc in Environmental and Resource Economics from UCL, and an MA in Economics and Chinese from the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on evaluating the impacts of climate policies on industrial sectors, particularly regarding competitiveness, trade, and innovation. She leads the ESRC Future Research Leaders project on climate policy impacts (2016–2018) and is Deputy Director of the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy.
Her work bridges environmental economics and policy analysis, examining carbon pricing mechanisms, carbon leakage, and the low-carbon transition's labor market implications. Notable contributions include studies on climate litigation's financial impacts, energy price effects on investment location, and the design of emissions trading systems. She has received awards including the FAERE Young Economist Best Paper Award (2018) and the GRASFI Best Paper Prize (2023).
Misato's research emphasizes evidence-based policy recommendations, addressing global challenges like industrial decarbonization and skills gaps. She collaborates with international organizations and policymakers to inform climate strategies, ensuring alignment with economic growth and environmental sustainability.
