Frank Venmans

Frank Venmans is an Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics (LSE). He previously held a position as Associate Professor in microeconomics and environmental economics at the University of Mons, Belgium (2015–2020). His research focuses on optimal climate policy design, integrated assessment modeling, carbon markets, and the valuation of ecosystem services. He serves as President of the Walloon Expert Committee on Climate, advising the Belgian government on emission reduction targets since 2016.

Research Interests: Climate policy evaluation, stochastic dynamic optimization, carbon pricing mechanisms, discounting frameworks, and biodiversity-carbon co-crediting systems. Publications: Over 30 peer-reviewed articles in top journals like Nature Sustainability, Ecological Economics, and Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. Recent work explores the social value of temporary carbon credits and the financial impacts of climate litigation.

Awards: Co-winner of the 2025 Frontiers Planet Prize for climate solutions, and 2023 Best Paper Prize at GRASFI for climate litigation research. His work on carbon market policing was highlighted in Climate Policy (2025).

Outreach: Leads courses on environmental policy analysis at LSE and the European Commission. Active in policy circles, advising governments and international bodies on climate targets and carbon market design.
