Dr. Misao Dean is a Professor of English at the University of Victoria, specializing in Early Canadian writing on animals and the natural world, the Canadian novel, and contemporary critical theory. Her research interrogates how literary discourses construct national identity, particularly through examinations of the canoe as a symbol of settler colonialism, feminist literary criticism, and environmental representation. Dean holds an MA from Carleton University and a PhD from Queen's University.
Her major works include Inheriting a Canoe Paddle (2013), which analyzes how the canoe mythologizes Canadian sovereignty, and Practising Femininity (1998), a study of gender performance in early Canadian novels. She also edited The Imperialist by Sara Jeannette Duncan (2005), providing critical context for this early 20th-century author.
Recent research explores affect theory and literary pleasure, alongside ongoing projects on animal representation in early Canadian texts. She teaches innovative courses like 'Literature and Motorcycle Cultures' (ENGL 250), which examines motorcycling through cultural studies, and 'Modern Canadian Novels' (ENGL 450), analyzing nationalism and colonialism in 20th-century fiction.
