Cecily Devereux is a Professor in the Department of English & Film Studies at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts. She holds a PhD (York University, 1995), MA (York University, 1990), and BA (Western University, 1988). Her research focuses on representations of femininity, maternal imagery, and gender in Anglo-imperial contexts since 1850. Current projects include SSHRC-funded work on white impersonations of Indigeneity in early 20th-century performance.
Teaching highlights include undergraduate critical analysis courses and graduate seminars on gender/sexuality studies. Awards include the 2017 Kathleen W. Klawe Prize for large-class teaching excellence. She has authored/co-edited major works such as Growing a Race: Nellie L. McClung and the Fiction of Eugenic Feminism (2005) and Salomania (2023).
Her recent publications analyze topics ranging from erotic dance's cultural logic to petrocultural femininity. Research interests integrate feminist theory, colonial history, and performance studies. She has held leadership roles in graduate teaching development and served on university-wide pedagogy committees.
