Dr. Miriam Moore is an Associate Professor of English at the University of North Georgia (UNG), affiliated with the College of Arts & Letters and the Department of English. She has been at UNG since 2018, contributing to courses in composition, grammar, ESOL pedagogy, and linguistics. Her expertise spans applied linguistics, ESOL/multilingual pedagogy, and composition education. Prior to UNG, she taught at various institutions, including community colleges and intensive English programs in South Carolina, New Jersey, and Virginia.
She earned her BA from Baylor University (1988), followed by an MA (1991) and PhD (1993) in Linguistics from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Moore’s teaching portfolio includes courses such as English Composition I, Advanced English Grammar, and Materials and Methods in ESOL.
Her research focuses on composition and grammar pedagogy, multilingual writing strategies, metalinguistic awareness, and discourse analysis in online learning environments. She explores how written feedback shapes knowledge structures in college writing and has contributed to understanding stance strategies in asynchronous discussions. Her work also examines lexical analysis in pandemic-era educational contexts and pedagogical innovations in distance learning.
In her role, Dr. Moore emphasizes practical teaching strategies, particularly for multilingual and developmental learners. She has co-authored the widely used Real Writing textbook series, focusing on composition and reading pedagogy. Her research bridges theoretical linguistics with classroom practice, advocating for inclusive and adaptive educational methods.
