Prof. Dr. Miriam Koopman is a Professor of Medical Oncology at Utrecht University and serves as Head of the Department of Medical Oncology at Utrecht University Medical Centre. She is an internist-oncologist specializing in colorectal cancer and chairs the Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group (DCCG). As one of the initiators of the Prospective National CRC cohort (PLCRC), she leads collaborative efforts across multiple hospitals and disciplines to optimize care for intestinal cancer patients.
Her educational background includes:
- Medical degree from Radboud University Nijmegen (1993-2000)
- Cum laude promotion (2000)
Prof. Koopman's research focuses on improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with colorectal and anal cancer. Her work centers on developing and validating biomarkers, enhancing therapeutic strategies, refining patient selection, and studying real-world treatment outcomes. She has been instrumental in the CAIRO studies on metastasized colon cancer, with results incorporated into national and international guidelines. A key aspect of her research involves creating better predictive factors to determine which treatments will benefit individual patients, including the development of a choice aid designed to facilitate 'making better choices together' with patients.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on personalized approaches to colorectal cancer treatment, with particular attention to molecular tumor characteristics, dietary and lifestyle factors, and real-world treatment patterns based on genetic markers like RAS/BRAF status. The research spans clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and implementation science to bridge the gap between research findings and clinical practice.
Scientific awards and recognitions include:
- Promoter of the year 2017 at the Graduate School of Life Sciences Utrecht
- Selection for the Steyn Parvé Programme for talented female researchers (2011)
- Best Poster Award at ESMO Congress, Milan, Italy (2010)
- Cum laude dissertation on optimal chemotherapy use in advanced colorectal cancer (2009)
- Best Clinical Research Paper 2007 from the Dutch Internists Association
- Dr. IBM Frye Stipendium for young excellent female researchers (2007)
As an academic supervisor, Prof. Koopman has mentored numerous PhD students, earning her the 'Promoter of the Year' award in 2017. Her leadership extends to major collaborative initiatives including the Dutch Colorectal Cancer Group and the Prospective National CRC cohort, which collects comprehensive data from patients across all stages of colorectal cancer. She serves on multiple advisory boards including the clinical advisory board of ONCODE, the ESMO working group on gastrointestinal tumors, and the Utrecht Life Sciences programme council.
Prof. Koopman leads the Medical Oncology department with particular focus on Colorectal Oncology. Through the PLCRC initiative, she coordinates a nationwide effort where hospitals and disciplines collaborate to gather patient data, tissue samples, blood, and questionnaires for research aimed at developing personalized therapies for each patient. Her work bridges clinical practice and research to translate scientific findings into improved patient care.
