Miriam Konkel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry at Clemson University, affiliated with the BDSI Core Faculty and a CUSHR Scholar. She holds an M.D. from Charité, Humboldt University (2000) and completed residencies in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine at Charité, Berlin. She joined Clemson in 2017 after postdoctoral work at Louisiana State University (LSU), where she also served as an Assistant Professor for Research (2011–2017).
Her research focuses on primate genomics, particularly genome-mobilome interactions and the evolution of mobile elements like Alu and Platy-1. She investigates lineage-specific mobilization rates and their implications for primate evolution. Additionally, her lab develops cyberphysical interfaces for genomics data interaction, leveraging tangible and multi-touch technologies to enhance collaborative analysis of large genomic datasets.
Key awards include the 2018 URSAAA Award and recognition for her work on Alu subfamily analysis (ASHG 2015). She teaches courses such as Human Genetics and Advanced Genetics, and her lab actively recruits postdoctoral researchers and computational scientists.
Lab locations include multiple facilities in the AG Biotech/Biosystems Research Complex. She has contributed to landmark genomic projects like the orangutan genome analysis and the 1000 Genomes Project, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, computer science, and design.
