Dr. Miriam Grotowski is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Newcastle Department of Rural Health, situated within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing. With over 30 years of dedicated service to the Tamworth community, she maintains an active role as a general practitioner and VMO at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital while contributing significantly to medical education.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Newcastle (1989), Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (1995), and a Master of Medical Education with Distinction from the University of Dundee (2020). She was awarded Life Membership in FRACGP in 2024.
Dr. Grotowski's research interests focus on medical education, particularly clinical reasoning, interprofessional learning, professionalism, and medical student well-being. Her work spans rural healthcare education, HIV/AIDS research, sexual health, and psychiatry (especially eating disorders). She has made significant contributions to understanding clinical reasoning development, interprofessional education models, and the challenges of delivering medical education in rural settings.
Her publication record demonstrates a strong trajectory in medical education research, with recent work focusing on adapting medical education during the pandemic, accommodating students with ADHD, and developing innovative teaching methods. Her earlier work includes substantial contributions to HIV/AIDS research, particularly regarding STIs in HIV-positive patients and outcomes among diverse populations.
Among her notable achievements are the 2003 NSW Practice of the Year award and the 2025 national award for Best Patient Outcomes for Smith Street GP Practice, which she co-founded. She has also received Life Membership in FRACGP (2024).
Dr. Grotowski actively supervises medical students and has served as an FRACGP examiner for over 15 years. She is a facilitator of the Certificate of Clinical Supervision and co-creator of the GP Certificate of Supervision and Teaching. Her grant funding includes significant projects related to clinical teaching certification and professionalism curriculum development.
She currently co-supervises a Master's student researching reflective thinking skills in occupational therapy students, continuing her commitment to developing reflective practitioners across healthcare disciplines.
