Miriam Chusid is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on Japanese art and visual culture, with special emphasis on East Asian Buddhist art, the role of women in religious image production, and the intersection of conservation and art history. She holds a PhD from Princeton University (2016), an MA from SOAS, University of London (2005), and a BA from Boston University (2004).

Her current book project, Envisioning the Afterlife: Image, Text, and Ritual Practice in Premodern Japan, examines 13th-century Buddhist hellscapes used in death rituals, analyzing their iconography, display strategies, and conservation practices. Prior to UW, she held postdoctoral fellowships at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Columbia University's Burke Center for Japanese Art, and served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Haverford College.
