Miranda E Worthen is Professor of Public Health & Recreation at San José State University and core member of the SJSU Human Rights Institute. Her teaching spans epidemiology, qualitative methods, and global health, with research focusing on public health-social justice intersections using participatory action approaches.
Her NIH/NSF-funded projects examine disparities in college mental health, community safety perceptions, and moral injury among first responders. Notable collaborations include the San Francisco Fire Department partnership and the People's Budget of San José study with Sacred Heart Community Services. Worthen's methodological innovations in war-affected populations research earned the Oxford Development Studies' Sanjaya Lall Prize.
Research outputs cluster around three themes: mental health disparities (college students, veterans), community safety/equity (policing reform, moral injury), and participatory methodologies. Her 50+ publications demonstrate consistent focus on amplifying marginalized voices through community-engaged scholarship.
