معرفی
Minkyu Kim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona's College of Engineering, with additional affiliation at the BIO5 Institute. His research focuses on designing, synthesizing, and characterizing biopolymer-based functional materials for applications in human health, defense, and environmental safety.
Dr. Kim's educational background includes:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, Duke University, 2011
- MS in Biomedical Engineering, Duke University, 2006
- BS in Mechanical Engineering, Kyung Hee University, Suwon, Korea, 2006
His research spans artificial protein design and synthesis, macromolecular self-assembly, soft condensed matter, bioinspired and biomimetic materials, soft-hard interface design, antimicrobials, and dust control. This interdisciplinary work develops innovative materials addressing critical challenges in healthcare, defense systems, and environmental sustainability through precise molecular engineering.
Analysis of Dr. Kim's recent publications (2021-2025) reveals three dominant research thrusts: antimicrobial biopolymer systems for infection control, advanced dust suppression technologies using biocompatible polymers, and recombinant protein engineering for regenerative medicine. His work demonstrates strong cross-disciplinary collaboration, particularly in developing sustainable solutions for airborne particulate control and biomaterials for tissue engineering.
Dr. Kim's major recognitions include:
- NSF CAREER award (2022)
- Excellence at the Student Interface awards (2017, 2018, 2025)
- Student Research Achievement Award, Biophysical Society (2010)
- Medtronic Pre-doctoral Fellowship (2009)
- Sigma Xi (2008)
- Graduate Study Abroad Fellowship, Korea Science Foundation (2004-2006)
He mentors undergraduate researchers through programs like UBRP and has secured substantial funding from NASA, CDMRP, NSF, NIEHS, and USDA. His teaching excellence is evidenced by courses including Synthetic and Biological Materials, Biomaterials and Tissue Interactions, and Materials Processing Laboratory, for which he has received multiple departmental awards.
The Kim Research Group at the University of Arizona recently expanded with Dr. Wonhyeong Kim (bioinspired glycolipid materials for air quality) and undergraduate researchers Melody Kosters (sound effects on human health) and Zain Francis (bioinspired red blood cell materials). Current projects focus on translating molecular design principles into functional materials for environmental safety and healthcare applications.
