Ming-Yuen S. Ma is a Professor of Media Studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, serving as Chair of the Intercollegiate Media Studies (IMS) program and core faculty in the Intercollegiate Department of Asian American Studies (IDAAS) at the Claremont Colleges.
He holds an MFA in Art from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Art History from Columbia University. His research centers on aural culture and sound theories, critically examining intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and national identities within migration/diaspora frameworks. He investigates global/local media flows through community-based production and experimental video art that deconstructs shifting identities via personal/family narratives.
Ma's recent publications reveal interdisciplinary rigor across media studies, performance art, and cultural theory. His work consistently bridges global video networks, live art reinterpretation, and spectral memory studies within diasporic contexts, demonstrating sustained innovation in experimental forms and critical identity politics.
His scholarly impact is recognized through competitive funding:
- Art Matters, Inc.
- Brody Arts Fund
- California Digital Arts Workshop
- Durfee Foundation
- Long Beach Museum of Art
- WESTAF/NEA
As a collaborative artist-scholar, Ma directs major initiatives including Resolution 3 (symposium/exhibition), the Xin Lu Project, and ReCut Project, frequently integrating student participation. His grant-funded work enables boundary-pushing explorations in media art and performance.
Ma's leadership extends to co-directing Resolution 3 with Carol Stakenas, co-editing GLQ's Moving Image Review with Alexandra Juhasz, and organizing media programs for Artists' Television Access, MIX/NYC, and CalArts. His intercollegiate program stewardship reflects deep commitment to interdisciplinary media scholarship.
