Mina Hosseinipour

Mina Hosseinipour, MD, MPH is a Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, where she serves as Scientific Director of UNC Project-Malawi. Her work focuses on infectious diseases research with a particular emphasis on global health initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa.

She received her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School and completed her MPH at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, establishing a strong foundation in both clinical medicine and public health that informs her research approach.

Dr. Hosseinipour's research interests center on HIV disease management in developing countries, including prevention strategies, interactions with endemic diseases, treatment of opportunistic infections and malignancies, and monitoring strategies for antiretroviral therapy. Her work has been instrumental in establishing antiretroviral therapy as a key HIV prevention strategy in resource-limited settings. She has led numerous large-scale clinical trials that have shaped global HIV treatment guidelines.

Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on improving HIV prevention and treatment in resource-limited settings, with particular attention to long-acting antiretrovirals, cryptococcal meningitis management, and tuberculosis treatment optimization. Her research spans clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and guideline development that directly impacts global health policy.

As Scientific Director of UNC Project-Malawi, Dr. Hosseinipour oversees a major research initiative based at the Tidziwe Centre in Lilongwe, Malawi. This program represents a significant collaboration between UNC and Malawian institutions, focusing on clinical research that addresses the most pressing infectious disease challenges in the region.

Her leadership extends to major international research consortia including the AIDS Clinical Trials Group, Tuberculosis Trials Consortium, and multiple HPTN studies. Through these collaborations, she has contributed to landmark studies that have transformed HIV prevention and treatment approaches worldwide, particularly in settings with limited healthcare resources.
