His work bridges laboratory innovation with clinical application, emphasizing drug design and development.
With over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 40 patents, Dr. Brown has translated scientific discoveries into real-world therapies. Two of his synthesized drugs are currently in Phase I/II clinical testing, and his inventions have led to the formation of five biotech companies. His research trends reflect a strong commitment to solving urgent health challenges through interdisciplinary science and innovation.
His numerous scientific honors include:
- Elected Fellow, National Academy of Inventors
- Percy Julian Award, National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (2015)
- Carilion Biomedical Institute Researcher of the Year Award
- Merck Academic Development Program Award
- UNCF/Merck Science Initiative Excellence in Achievement Award
- Dexter Squibb Award in Chemistry
- Appointed to National Toxicology Program Board of Scientific Counselors (2013–2017)
- NBC Channel 4 T44 Working for the Community Award (2019)
Dr. Brown has served as a scientific reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Department of Defense, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also contributed to national science policy through his advisory role on the National Toxicology Program. While specific advisees are not listed, his leadership in research and education suggests a strong mentoring presence. He has secured significant research funding, as evidenced by his endowed chair and sustained research output. He leads a dynamic research program focused on drug discovery and translational innovation.
Dr. Brown leads a multidisciplinary research team focused on drug design, preclinical development, and clinical translation. His lab has been instrumental in advancing novel therapeutics from concept to clinical testing, particularly in high-impact areas such as radiation injury and fibrotic diseases.
