Miles Anthony Reid is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick, part of the Faculty of Science's Mathematics Department. His academic career spans over five decades, including roles as Director of the Warwick Mathematics Research Centre (2004–2014) and visiting scholar at institutions like KIAS (Seoul) and Sogang University. He holds prestigious awards including FRS (2002) and LMS prizes (2006, 2014).
His research focuses on Algebraic Geometry, particularly 3-folds, birational geometry, and the McKay correspondence. Notable contributions include foundational work on canonical singularities, graded rings, and Fano varieties. He has supervised over 30 PhD students, many of whom are now leading academics globally.
Reid has organized major research symposia, including the 2007–08 Algebraic Geometry EPSRC Symposium. His work integrates geometric and algebraic techniques, with applications in derived categories and moduli spaces. Current teaching includes graduate courses on algebra and algebraic geometry.
Awards highlight his impact: FRS, LMS Berwick, and Polya prizes for contributions to algebraic geometry. His legacy includes influential books like Undergraduate Algebraic Geometry and co-editing volumes on explicit birational geometry of 3-folds.
