As a Doctoral Researcher within the Law, Technology and Sustainability Transitions group, he contributes to interdisciplinary projects examining legal frameworks for eco-innovation and circular economies.
His research spans:
- Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Law
- Sustainability Transitions in Legal Systems
- Right to Repair Advocacy and Compulsory Licensing
- 3D Printing Applications in Medical and Bio-based Contexts

This work underscores law's pivotal role in enabling circular economies and reducing electronic waste through systemic IP reforms.
Kaunisvaara participates in major funded projects including ValueBioMat (2019-2023, Research Council of Finland) on bio-oils based polymeric composites for additive manufacturing, and the ongoing VBM 2 project (2022-2025, Academy of Finland) extending this research. His contributions focus on intellectual property dimensions within interdisciplinary teams developing sustainable material value chains.
He collaborates within the Law, Technology and Sustainability Transitions research group at the University of Lapland, working alongside engineers and materials scientists to integrate legal perspectives into technological sustainability initiatives, with particular emphasis on medical 3D printing and bio-based material innovation.
