Mikkel Fruergaard is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science. He leads research in coastal geomorphology and plastic pollution dynamics within the Geomorphology, Processes and Landscapes research group.
- PhD in Geosciences (2013, University of Copenhagen)
- MSc in Geography and Geoinformatics (2009, University of Copenhagen)
- BSc in Geography and Geoinformatics (2006, University of Copenhagen)
His research focuses on coastal evolution mechanisms including sea-level rise impacts, storm surge effects, and plastic pollution dynamics. Current projects examine Wadden Sea barrier islands, tidal flats, salt marshes, and microplastic transport processes in estuaries. His methodological expertise includes OSL dating, sedimentology, and stratigraphy.
Recent publications highlight trends in marine plastic pollution research (2022-2025), particularly flocculation mechanisms affecting microplastic sedimentation, and coastal geomorphology studies analyzing sand spit evolution and sea-level rise impacts in Denmark and Southeast Asia. His work bridges field observations with laboratory analysis across multiple international collaborations.
- Member: Royal Danish Geographical Society
- Member: Danish Geological Society
- Member: International Association of Sedimentologists
He supervises graduate students and teaches Marine Geoscience, Coastal Geoscience, and Global Geosystems courses while conducting fieldwork across Denmark, Germany, France, Greenland, and the USA.
