Mikhail Bessmeltsev is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal, affiliated with the Université de Montréal Graphics Lab (LIGUM). His research focuses on 3D shape generation from 2D sketches and computational methods for artistic creation. He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia (2016) and completed postdoctoral studies at MIT's CSAIL under Justin Salomon. He teaches courses in computer graphics and project-based computer science, supervising graduate students in PhD/MSc programs.
Education:
- PhD in Computer Science, University of British Columbia (2016)
- Postdoctoral Researcher, MIT CSAIL (2016–2019)
Research Interests: Development of intuitive tools for 2D-to-3D modeling, sketch-based animation, and geometric algorithms for digital art. Key areas include vectorization of bitmap sketches, stability-aware curve simplification, and expressive character pose estimation from sketches.
Grants & Projects:
- Lead researcher on CRSNG-funded projects like "Modelling and animation via intuitive input" (2024–2030)
- FRQNT grants for sketch processing fundamentals and animation expressiveness
Labs/Teams: Director of LIGUM, collaborating with Pierre Poulin and Alla Sheffer on multi-institutional projects.
