Dr. Mikel Mellick is a Principal Lecturer at the Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences, Cardiff Metropolitan University. He specializes in sport psychology, mental health, and therapeutic approaches, with a focus on athlete wellbeing and developmental perspectives. His roles include leading mental health initiatives within the school, serving as a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, and supervising BPS Stage 2 Trainees. He balances academic work with a private practice as a registered psychologist, addressing athlete mental health and major life events.
Mellick's research explores occupational stress in classical musicians, sports officials' mental health, and soccer referee wellbeing. He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals and authored chapters on trauma-informed practices and mental health champions in sports. Awards include a 2015 University Student-Led Teaching Fellowship for excellence in teaching. He is a founding member of the BPS Division of Sport & Exercise Psychology and holds an Associate Fellowship with the British Psychological Society.
His professional activities include applied suicide intervention training and advocacy for mental health networks in sports.
