Dr. Mike Rayner is an Associate Professor and Head of the School of Psychology, Sport, and Health Sciences at the University of Portsmouth. His academic roles include leading the school, supervising PhD students, and editorial board memberships for journals like Managing Sport and Leisure. He holds prestigious fellowships, including National Teaching Fellow (HEA) and Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). His research focuses on Sport Management, particularly organizational behavior, employee well-being, and governance in professional sports. He has authored/co-authored books including Referees, Match Officials and Abuse and Sport Management Education: Global Perspectives.
Dr. Rayner’s research addresses issues such as athlete safety in community sports, AI in sport marketing, and global education strategies. He is a leading voice in addressing match official abuse, advocating for policy reforms and mental health support. His teaching contributions include founding the MSc Sport Management program and advancing international curriculum development through initiatives like the Turing Scheme.
