Mike S. Schäfer is a Full Professor of Science Communication at the Institute for Communication and Media Research (IKMZ) at the University of Zurich, where he also serves as Head of Department. His academic career includes roles as Director of the Center of Higher Education and Science Studies (CHESS) since 2015 and as an Assistant Professor at the University of Hamburg (2010–2013). He holds a PhD in Sociology from the Free University of Berlin (2007).
His research focuses on science communication, environmental and climate change communication, artificial intelligence, and public perceptions of science. He has led projects on media constructions of climate change, science policy, and digital media impacts. Schäfer is an elected member of acatech (German National Academy of Science and Engineering), and has held visiting roles at Monash University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Pennsylvania.
He contributes to multiple editorial boards, including Public Understanding of Science and Environmental Communication, and advises bodies like the Swiss National Science Foundation and acatech. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, with recent attention to AI's societal implications, climate communication strategies, and misinformation dynamics in digital spaces.
