Professor Mike Ryan is a leading academic and research leader at Monash University, where he serves as Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Vice-President, and as Head of the Mitochondrial Biology and Disease Laboratory in the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (BDI), within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and PhD in Biochemistry from La Trobe University and was previously Head of the Department of Biochemistry at La Trobe University. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and served as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Monash before his current leadership role.
Professor Ryan's research is centered on mitochondrial biology, particularly mitochondrial disease, dynamics, and the molecular basis of disorders affecting oxidative phosphorylation. His lab uses gene editing, proteomics, and mouse models to study mitochondrial protein function and disease mechanisms. He leads major projects on Complex I dysfunction, mitochondrial dynamics, the MICOS complex, and mtDNA release. His work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through biomedical discovery.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on mitochondrial fission/fusion, OXPHOS assembly, and the role of mitochondria in cell death and disease. Articles in Nature, Cell Metabolism, and PNAS highlight his lab’s impact on understanding mitochondrial dynamics, Complex I and IV assembly, and metabolic reprogramming.
- ASBMB Lemberg Medal (2023)
- Roche Medal, ASBMB (2006)
- President, ASBMB (2015–2016)
- Chair, International Human Frontier Science Program Research Grant Committee
- Board Member and Chair of Scientific and Medical Advisory Panel, Mito Foundation
Professor Ryan has advised numerous PhD and postdoctoral researchers, including current group leaders Dr. Luke Formosa and Dr. Kate McArthur. His lab collaborates nationally and internationally, with funding from NHMRC, ARC, MRFF, and the Mito Foundation. He is actively involved in graduate research programs and is accepting new PhD students through Supervisor Connect.
The Ryan Lab is a key member of the Metabolism, Diabetes & Obesity and Neuroscience Programs at the BDI, fostering interdisciplinary research. The lab employs advanced techniques including CRISPR/Cas9, BN-PAGE, mass spectrometry, and live-cell imaging to investigate mitochondrial function and disease.
