Dr. Mike Rickhuss is a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Education, Faculty of Education, Health & Wellbeing, University of Wolverhampton. He supports PhD and EdD students and has over 40 years of experience in mathematics education, teacher training, and curriculum leadership. His work bridges academic research and school-based practice, particularly within secondary mathematics education.
His educational background includes a PhD from the University of Wolverhampton (2019), a Master of Philosophy and multiple bachelor's degrees in Mathematics, Computing, and Science from The Open University and other institutions.
His research focuses on mathematics teacher education, lesson design, the use of pedagogical language, teacher self-efficacy, and the integration of spreadsheets in teaching mathematics. He is currently investigating the effects of lesson design on teaching fractions. His work emphasizes reflective practice and professional development aligned with the DfE (2012) Teachers' Standards.
The publications reflect a sustained focus on understanding how mathematical tasks are conceptualized by trainee teachers and how technology can enhance classroom instruction. His research spans pedagogical theory, curriculum design, and practical implementation in secondary schools.
Dr. Rickhuss has held leadership roles in multiple schools and local authorities, including as Head of Mathematics Faculty and Curriculum Leader. He also mentors new and experienced teachers through his involvement with the University of Wolverhampton Multi-Academy Trust (UWMAT), where he serves as a trust member and former governor. He provides strategic support for mathematics leadership in secondary academies.
He has contributed to academic discourse through conference presentations at BERA and the Institute of Education Research Conference, and published in journals such as Education and Computing. His industry experience includes managing a computer company and working in IT education, enriching his interdisciplinary perspective.
