David Coglan is a Lecturer in Secondary Mathematics Education at the University of Birmingham's School of Education. He is part of the Initial Teacher Education team and teaches on the PGDipEd (QTS) Secondary Mathematics programme. His roles include supervising MA Teaching Studies students and leading outreach initiatives to support schools and students in the West Midlands. He holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and completed his Initial Teacher Education at the University of Birmingham.
His professional experience includes serving as Head of Mathematics at Kings Norton Girls’ School and contributing to the EEF-funded project on Best Practice in Mixed-Attainment Teaching, which won the 2016 BCF-BERA award. David advocates for inclusive teaching strategies to challenge students of all abilities and has authored lesson materials emphasizing equitable curriculum access.
Research interests focus on mixed-attainment teaching, teacher education, and curriculum design. He is an active member of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) and is currently authoring a book on effective mathematics lesson structuring. His outreach work includes collaborating with five Birmingham schools to enhance attainment and aspiration, alongside supporting A-level students through the A2B program.
