Dr. Mike Pikaart is a Professor of Chemistry at Hope College since 1999. He specializes in biochemistry pedagogy, environmental microbiology, and protein-DNA interactions, contributing to both undergraduate education and international water purification research.
- Education: PhD in Biological Chemistry (University of Michigan, 1992); BS in Chemistry (Calvin College, 1986)
Research Interests span three areas: Environmental microbiology for watershed testing and filters in developing countries; biochemistry pedagogy via the BASIL consortium to determine protein functions in teaching labs; and protein-DNA interactions in gene regulation, particularly GATA proteins and beta-globin insulators.
Grants include five years of continuous NSF-IUSE funding (2015–2020) and NIH grants (2003–2010) for GATA protein specificity. He actively participates in professional service, such as judging at ASBMB meetings, coaching Science Olympiad, and serving as a Grand Awards Judge for the Intel Science Fair.
Community engagement includes leadership as President of the Pediatric Oncology Resource Team (PORT) at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and volunteering in Child Life programs since 2014.
