Mike Bernardin is an Associate Professor in Drama at the University of East Anglia, School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing. He is based in the Arts and Humanities Building and is actively engaged in teaching, performance, and international actor training. His professional background combines academic scholarship with extensive practice in theatre and screen performance.
Mike trained as an actor in London and has performed in major theatre productions across the UK, including the West End and the Royal National Theatre. His performance credits include Blood Brothers, The Patsy Cline Story, The Duchess of Malfi, and Lear, as well as screen work in Krakatoa for Channel 4 and HBO. As a director, he led Fervent Theatre Company for six years, staging plays such as Closer, Oleanna, and Proof.
His research and teaching interests center on drama and performance, with a strong emphasis on actor coaching, rehearsal practices, and pedagogical methods in theatre education. He regularly guest teaches at leading European drama institutions, including the Schaubühne and Konrad Wolf Film University in Berlin, KHM in Cologne, and drama schools in Copenhagen and Istanbul.
Mike Bernardin contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through participatory methods in education, particularly in developing interview and communication skills. His media contribution titled 'Here’s what not to do' reflects his engagement with innovative teaching practices.
He continues to work as a personal coach to actors, directors, and writers worldwide, bridging academic and professional theatre communities. His work exemplifies the integration of practice-based research and performance scholarship.
