Professor Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur is a Professor of Sociology at Rhode Island College within the School of Arts and Sciences. She serves as Director of the M.A. in Justice Studies program and as President of the RIC/AFT Local 1819 union. Her academic work focuses on sociology of higher education, social research methods, and justice studies.
Professor Arthur earned her B.A. in sociology from Mount Holyoke College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from New York University. Her educational background has shaped her approach to teaching and research in the social sciences.
Professor Arthur's research interests span multiple areas within sociology, with a particular focus on higher education systems, social research methodology, and justice studies. She has developed expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, which she applies to studies of educational institutions, student activism, and curricular change. Her work examines how power structures operate within educational settings and how students and faculty can work to create more equitable learning environments. She has published extensively on comparative law and justice systems, social data analysis, and the relationship between education and workforce development. Her research often bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications, making her work valuable to both academic and policy communities.
Professor Arthur has published four books including "Social Data Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches" (with Roger Clark, 2023), "Law and Justice Around the World" (2020), "Student Activism and Curricular Change in Higher Education" (2011), and "Social Change" (Volume 7 in the Student Handbook to Sociology, 2012). Her recent scholarly output shows a strong focus on methodological approaches to social research, institutional analysis in higher education, and comparative legal systems. She has developed innovative teaching tools such as "Research Methods Jeopardy" to engage students with complex methodological concepts.
As an active participant in the American Sociological Association, Professor Arthur has served in various section and editorial positions. She is a member of the Research-to-Policy Collaborative Rapid Response Network, providing evidence-based policy support to legislative offices. She frequently gives expert testimony at the Rhode Island General Assembly and has organized workshops on legislative testimony for sociologists.
Professor Arthur directs the M.A. in Justice Studies program at Rhode Island College and teaches courses including Social Research Methods, Comparative Perspectives on Higher Education, Social Data Analysis, and various courses related to law and justice. She serves as President of the RIC/AFT Local 1819 union, demonstrating her commitment to faculty rights and collective bargaining in higher education.
