Mikael Engskog is a Lecturer at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry; Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Uppsala University. His research focuses on metabolomics using NMR and mass spectrometry, emphasizing sample preparation and method development. He holds a magisterexam in Biomolecular Chemistry from Södertörn University College and a PhD from Karolinska Institutet, where his thesis involved structural characterization of Haemophilus influenzae lipopolysaccharides. Engskog has extensive experience in analytical chemistry techniques including NMR (1H, 13C, 31P), mass spectrometry (GC-MS, ESI-MS), chromatography (HPLC, UPLC), and molecular biology methods (PCR, Western blotting).
His research interests span metabolomics applications in cancer, neurodegeneration, and toxicology, with notable contributions to metabolic profiling of cancer cell lines, radiation response mechanisms, and ototoxicity studies. Collaborations include work with Oxford University and Karolinska Institutet on bacterial glycobiology. Engskog’s technical expertise includes method validation, adduct formation analysis, and metabolite selectivity evaluation. His recent work addresses systemic metabolic changes in disease models, leveraging advanced analytical platforms for biomarker discovery.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary projects such as microglial inflammation studies, hydrogen gas therapy for hearing loss, and glutamine dependency in tumors. Engskog’s work emphasizes high data quality in LC-MS and NMR profiling, with methodological innovations like the co-feature ratio for chromatographic selectivity assessment. His lab contributes to both fundamental analytical chemistry and translational studies in disease mechanisms.
