Prof. Dr. Mika Tarkka is a Research Professor and Head of the Department of Soil Ecology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Halle/Saale, Germany. His research focuses on plant beneficial microorganisms, particularly their roles in enhancing plant growth and stress tolerance under environmental challenges like drought and soil compaction. He leads projects investigating microbial interactions in agricultural crops and pedunculate oak, emphasizing mycorrhizal symbiosis and synthetic microbial communities for crop resilience.
He holds a Ph.D. (2001) in Physiological Ecology of Plants from the University of Tübingen and has held senior research positions since 2007 at UFZ. His work bridges molecular biology, ecology, and environmental science, with applications in sustainable agriculture and climate adaptation. Notable projects include the GLIMPSE initiative on global change impacts and the PhytOakmeter platform studying oak tree adaptation across Europe.
Key research interests include rhizosphere microbiome dynamics, drought tolerance mechanisms, and microbial community responses to environmental stressors. His team collaborates with institutions like the University of Amsterdam and the University of Tübingen, mentoring multiple PhD students. Recent publications highlight advancements in understanding microbial contributions to plant resilience and soil health under climate change.
Prof. Tarkka has supervised prominent students including Henrike Würsig (drought-tolerant microbial communities) and Linda Rigerte (barley microbiome studies). His research has been funded through DFG initiatives like SPP 2089 and SPP 2125. Collaborations with platforms like the Global Change Experimental Facility (GCEF) further his interdisciplinary approach to environmental microbiology.
