Dr. Mihaela Popa-Wyatt is a Research Fellow at the Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) in Berlin, Germany. She holds a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship under the HaLO project, investigating how language is used to perpetuate oppression. Her primary affiliation is within Research Area 4: 'Semantics & Pragmatics.'
Her research focuses on the intersection of philosophy of language, social epistemology, and ethics. Key areas include the analysis of slurs, verbal irony, figurative language, and how oppressive speech dynamically alters social norms and hierarchies. She has presented widely on these topics, including conferences at the University of British Columbia, Humboldt University Berlin, and the Ditchley Foundation.
Popa-Wyatt's work bridges linguistics and philosophy, addressing questions about language's role in shaping social structures. Her recent studies explore the game-theoretic models of social oppression through slurs and the ethical implications of harmful language dissemination. She has taught courses such as 'Semantics, Natural Logic, and Common Sense Reasoning' at the DGfS XPrag.de Summer School (2019).
- Awards: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (HaLO Project)
- Key Projects: Modeling Meaning-Driven Register Variation; Oppressive Speech Dynamics
Her interdisciplinary approach engages with political philosophy, race theory, and gender studies, reflecting her commitment to understanding language's societal impact. She actively participates in policy discussions on regulating harmful speech and has collaborated on projects like 'The Telegram Chronicles of Online Harm.'
