Miguel Velez-Reyes is a Professor and Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He leads the Computational Science division within the College of Engineering. His research focuses on integrating signal processing, machine learning, and remote sensing techniques for applications in space situational awareness, cybersecurity, and smart cities. He advocates for equitable educational access for socioeconomically disadvantaged students, particularly through initiatives like the 2TO4 project, which facilitates transitions from 2-year to 4-year engineering programs.
His work spans interdisciplinary domains including hyperspectral imaging, cyber-physical systems, and space domain awareness. Notable projects include NASA-funded studies on space object spectral signatures and Department of Energy grants for nuclear security workforce training. He has also received recognition for his role in UTEP’s MUREP award to engage Hispanic students in engineering.
Dr. Velez-Reyes actively collaborates on educational equity initiatives such as the Inclusive Engineering Consortium and the Hispanic AGEP Alliance. His research has led to advancements in hyperspectral unmixing algorithms and adaptive cruise control systems for traffic optimization.
Key grants and awards include a $5M DOE grant for nuclear security education, a $1M NSF grant for student transition programs, and a NASA MUREP award. His work bridges technical innovation with social impact, emphasizing STEM accessibility and community partnerships.
