Professor Miguel Alonso is a University Professor and Deputy Director of Research at Centrale Méditerranée, where he also serves as Head of the Waves and Signals teaching unit and as Mexico and United States Representative. He leads the Mathematical Optics Group at the Fresnel Institute, conducting research at the intersection of mathematical physics and optical engineering.
His research interests span a wide range of topics in mathematical optics, including structured light phenomena, nonparaxial field theory, geometric phases, and optical coherence. He has made significant contributions to understanding the polarization properties of nonparaxial optical fields, spin-orbit interactions in light, and the development of mathematical frameworks for describing complex optical phenomena. His work combines rigorous mathematical analysis with practical applications in optical metrology, imaging, and light-matter interaction.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on the mathematical description of structured light fields, particularly examining their polarization properties, topological features, and applications in optical manipulation. His research bridges fundamental optical physics with practical engineering applications, with particular emphasis on nonparaxial effects that become significant in highly focused optical systems.
Professor Alonso has supervised numerous doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers, including Isael HERRERA, Yi-Ting Sherry FENG, Sophie VO, Luis Arturo ALEMAN-CASTANEDA, and David MARCO, reflecting his active role in mentoring the next generation of optical scientists.
His research group maintains strong international collaborations, with connections to institutions in France, the United States, and beyond, demonstrating the global impact of his work in mathematical optics and structured light research.
