Mick Finch is a Professor of Research at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, with a studio-based practice integrating visual art, writing, and academic research. His work spans painting, digital art, and archival studies, focusing on the intersections of image theory, post-war French art, and Aby Warburg's methodologies.
- BA (Painting) - Ravensbourne, UK (1977-1980)
- MA (Painting) - Royal College of Art, UK (1982-1985)
Finch's research examines visual art practices through the lens of tableau theory, expanded painting, and digital archival systems. He leads the AHRC-funded Imagining Futures through Un/Archived Pasts project and participates in the EU Horizon 2020 T-Factor initiative, both exploring cultural memory and transformative urban practices.
His recent publications and exhibitions investigate photographic appropriation, synoptic methodologies, and the epistemology of images. Projects like Book of Knowledge and Tableau symposia at Tate Modern and Warburg Institute demonstrate his commitment to interdisciplinary inquiry.
Scientific awards include:
- Abbey Fellow in Painting (British School in Rome, 2011)
- Senior Scholar (Terra Foundation, Paris)
Finch serves as interim chair of the Faculty of Fine Art at the British School in Rome and contributes to editorial boards of the Journal of Contemporary Painting and Journal of Visual Art Practice.
