Professor Michèle Mendelssohn holds dual roles as Professor of English and American Literature at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of English and Tutorial Fellow at Mansfield College. Her research bridges late 19th-century to contemporary literature, focusing on British, American, and African American texts. She is renowned for her interdisciplinary work on Oscar Wilde, aestheticism, and polar narratives. Current projects include the POLAR X initiative, examining women’s Arctic narratives and environmental politics through literature, gender studies, and Indigeneity. Her book Making Oscar Wilde redefined Wilde scholarship, winning multiple awards and inspiring a stage play. She co-curated the Making History exhibition on Oxford’s Black queer undergraduates, recognized for advancing diversity initiatives.
Her scholarly outputs span monographs, edited collections, and peer-reviewed articles, addressing topics like James Baldwin’s radical frameworks, Cynthia Ozick’s nonfiction, and the intersections of race, sexuality, and aesthetic culture. She actively collaborates across disciplines and institutions, including Université Paris Cité and the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities. Her writing engages both academic and public audiences, emphasizing accessible, politically resonant scholarship.
