Michèle LaVigne is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Earth and Oceanographic Science Department at Bowdoin College, affiliated with the Roux Center for the Environment and Schiller Coastal Studies Center. She holds a PhD in Oceanography from Rutgers University and a BA in Environmental Chemistry/Geology from Hampshire College. Her research focuses on marine biogeochemistry and paleoceanography, particularly investigating how climate change impacts ocean nutrient cycles, acidification, and marine ecosystems. She actively mentors students through collaborative research and community science initiatives, such as the coastal total alkalinity assessment project involving undergraduate researchers.
Dr. LaVigne has secured significant grants, including a $733,792 NSF grant for Gulf of Maine paleoceanography studies and a Maine Sea Grant award for reconstructing coastal pH baselines. Her work bridges science and policy, evidenced by her role as an AGU Science Policy Fellow (2022–2023) and participation in climate advocacy panels. She teaches courses like Paleoceanography and Geoscience for the Common Good, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges.
Her research outputs span over two decades, with high-impact studies in journals like Geophysical Research Letters and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Key topics include coral geochemistry, bamboo coral nutrient proxies, and bivalve responses to ocean acidification. She collaborates widely, engaging in both academic and community-based projects to advance climate resilience strategies.
