Dr. Michèle Birtel is an Associate Professor of Social Clinical Psychology at the University of Greenwich's School of Human Sciences, where she serves as Centre Lead of the Centre for Mental Health and Director of the Health Inequalities and Stigma Lab. Her research focuses on health equity, social determinants of health, stigma dynamics, intergroup relations, AI applications in health, and cyber security/online harms.
Dr. Birtel holds a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Kent and a Diploma in Psychology from the University of Mannheim. She teaches courses in psychopathology, clinical psychology, social psychology, and research methods.
Her extensive publication record demonstrates interdisciplinary research spanning social psychology, health disparities, and technology applications. Recent work explores VR-based pain perception studies, pandemic-related behavior changes across cultures, interventions for political polarization, and machine learning models for attitude prediction. Her research consistently addresses pressing societal issues through innovative methodologies.
Dr. Birtel actively contributes to academic discourse through international collaborations and welcomes PhD applications. She maintains research affiliations with the University of Vienna as a Senior Research Fellow in Health Psychology.
