Michi Tobler is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Missouri—St. Louis, affiliated with the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center. Her research focuses on evolutionary ecology, adaptation, and speciation in extreme environments, particularly in Poeciliidae fish species.
- Research Areas: Evolutionary ecology, fish biology, extreme environments, biodiversity, and conservation.
- Academic Role: E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor in Zoological Studies.
- Contact: tobler@umsl.edu, (314) 516-5101, Office S454 Stadler Hall.
Her lab investigates how organisms diversify phenotypically and evolve reproductive barriers, with emphasis on genomic variation in sulfide springs, caves, and desert wetlands. Collaborations with zoos and NGOs aim to conserve threatened species by integrating ecological and evolutionary insights.
Scientific Awards:
- E. Desmond Lee Endowed Professor in Zoological Studies
Undergraduate researchers in the Tobler Lab engage in hands-on projects, from fieldwork to publication, and are encouraged to pursue independent studies through BIOL 698. The lab fosters professional development and participation in weekly meetings to discuss ongoing work and literature.
