Michelle Welsh is a Professor in the Department of Business Law and Taxation at Monash Business School, Monash University. She serves as Senior Deputy Dean (Faculty Operations) and previously led the Department as Head from 2016 to 2020. Her research focuses on public enforcement of corporate law, corporate accountability, and regulatory mechanisms to combat fraudulent practices like phoenix activity. Welsh has held significant roles, including President of the Australian Corporate Law Teachers Association (2015–2016) and membership in the European Corporate Governance Institute and the Law Council of Australia's Corporations Committee.
Her academic background includes a PhD from Melbourne University, awarded the top thesis prize in 2009 for her work on civil penalties under the Corporations Act. She leads major research initiatives, such as the Monash University Network of Excellence project 'Enhancing Corporate Accountability' (2019–2023) and an ARC Discovery Project on Phoenix Activity (2014–2017). These projects collaborate with institutions like the National University of Singapore and Manchester University.
Key research interests include corporate compliance, debt management firm regulation, gender diversity in corporate boards, and cross-border corporate governance. Welsh actively engages in international dialogues, presenting at institutions such as the University of Michigan and the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly fostering responsible consumption and production through corporate accountability.
