Michelle V. Moncrieffe is a Lecturer in the English Department at the University of Maryland’s College of Arts & Humanities. She also serves as an advisor and transdisciplinary researcher, leading the NAME Project as its Principal Investigator. Her work focuses on addressing systemic racism in healthcare through narrative research and community engagement. Moncrieffe holds a Master of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in health communication from the University of Iowa and has extensive experience in global health research, including a role as a research associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Her career spans over two decades as a health journalist, with bylines in Baltimore Magazine, Johns Hopkins Health Review, and U.S. local newspapers. She began her teaching career at the Tanzania School of Journalism in Dar es Salaam. Moncrieffe is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and remains connected to her London roots despite residing elsewhere for many years.
Her research emphasizes healthcare equity, particularly dental care disparities among marginalized communities. The NAME Project seeks to disrupt ineffective healthcare systems by centering community narratives.
Moncrieffe was recognized in the 2022/2023 cohort of the Center for Literary and Comparative Studies (CLCS) Awards in the Public Humanities for her innovative work.
