Michelle Scollo, PhD, is a Professor of Communication and Assistant Dean of the School of Humanities, Communication, and Art at the University of Mount Saint Vincent. She holds a PhD and MA from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a BA from the University of New Hampshire. Her research focuses on ethnography of communication, cultural discourse analysis, environmental communication, and health communication.
Her work bridges theoretical and applied communication studies, emphasizing cultural nuances in interpersonal and intercultural interactions. She has authored/co-authored influential books and journal articles, including Engaging and Transforming Global Communication through Cultural Discourse Analysis, which earned the National Communication Association’s Outstanding Publication Award. Her research explores topics like romantic relationship development across cultures, communication in healthcare contexts, and environmental discourse.
Dr. Scollo actively contributes to academic leadership as Co-Chair of the National Communication Association’s Language and Social Interaction Division and through editorial roles. She has secured grants, such as the NCA’s Advancing the Discipline Grant for a conference on the ethnography of communication.
Her teaching spans courses like Intercultural Communication, Health Communication, and Ethnographic Research Methods, reflecting her commitment to both scholarship and pedagogy. She has advised numerous presentations at major conferences, emphasizing collaborative international learning and interdisciplinary research.
