Michelle Liebst is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College London (UCL), specializing in East African history. She works on the ERC-funded project 'African Abolitionism: The Rise and Transformations of Anti-Slavery in Africa (AFRAB)'. Her research focuses on anti-slavery legal documents, labor history in Christian missions, and the role of intermediaries in ending slavery in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Education:
- PhD in History, University of Cambridge
Her research interests include the intersection of labor, Christianity, and colonialism in East Africa, with a particular emphasis on Zanzibar and Tanganyika. She has published widely on mission history, urban slavery, and emancipation processes, culminating in her 2021 book Labour and Christianity in the Mission.
Her publications analyze historical narratives of slavery, mission dynamics, and religious institutions, contributing to broader debates on abolitionism and colonial legacies.
Advising and Grants: Liebst has held research fellowships at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (2020) and taught at the University of Birmingham (2018–2019).
